All you need to know about Cub Scouts
How Cub Scouts are categorized:
Boys and Girls ages 5K-5th Grade are welcome!
When choosing a unit to join, we encourage you to pick the unit that fits your needs the most. We recommend choosing a unit that meets on days you are available, and is located within close proximity to your house, school, church or the most cnovient place for you!
This unit is called a “Pack” for Ages 5k-5th grade
A Pack is broken down into age groups called “Dens” which reflect your childs grade level. (Same as in an elementary school)
Each Den has an adult leader (similar to a teacher)
What do we do in Cub Scouts?
Your Scout will have the opporunity to camp, fish, learn about nature, enjoy STEM activites and more!
Scouting also offers the opportunity for your Scout to learn about teamwork, confidence, leadership, safety and much more!
Similar to a schools curriculum, your Scout will have a set of activities and targets to achieve wihtin their age level. For example, a Tiger (1st grade) will take a 20 minute walk out in nature, and a Webelos (4th grade) will plan a 2 mile walk.
What do they earn?
Your Scout will earn “belt loops” which are small clasps that fit on their uniform belt to show off their achievements and hard work.
How are Parents and Guardians involved?
Cub Scouting is designed to be flexible with the busiest of parents/ Gaurdians and you can be as involved as you would like!
A parent or Gaurdian must be present at all Pack meetings, activies and campouts.
You are welcome to be the parent who helps plan the actvities, bring the snacks and organizes the campouts, or you can be the parent who simply attends and brings the pack of Oreos! As long as you are present, thats all that matters!
The benefits to parent and Gaurdian involvment:
You have a set day and time each week to spend quality time with your child!
Allows you time to teach and lead by example
Provides you the opportunity to encourage your childs advancement!
Financial Commitment
Registration cost: $134
This cost covers 12 months from the day you pay your registration fee.
Additional Costs:
Pack Dues:
Every Pack is different. Some have annual fees that they use towards belt loop achievements, activites, campouts and more. Some are pay to play, if you don’t want to participate in that particular campout, then you do not pay for it. Reach out to the contact listed for the unit you are interested in for specific details.
Uniform costs:
Each Pack is different. Some require you just buy the shirt, some require the whole uniform. Reach out to the contact listed for the unit you are interested in for specific details.
Good news is that 1st - 4th graders can wear the same uniform until they outgrow it!

Common Questions
What if my child also has other sports and hobbies?
That is perfectly fine! Many of our Scouts keep a full schedule. If your Scout needs to take a break from attending meetings for a little while, no problem! They can pick back up where they left off when they return!
What if I have a younger child who is not old enough for Scouts yet?
No problem! Your younger Children are welcome to tag along with you and your older Scout!
What if I have an older child who is interested in Scouts?
We love to hear that! You can find more information on our Troop level scouts (6th - 12th grade) here.
Is the registration fee refundable?
No, unfortunatly the registration fee is not refundable.
I want to switch my Unit/Pack
If you would like to change your Pack, no problem. It is an easy switch! Just contact Adam.McCarrison@Scouting.org and let him know what Pack you are currently in and what pack you would like to move to.
Do you offer uniform assistance?
Yes, the Palmetto Council Scour Shop has a Scout closet of lightly used uniforms that have been donated. Give us a call at 864-585-4391 or visit us at 420 S Church Street in Spartanburg, SC 29306 and we will be happy to assist you with that process.
Do you accomidate Scouts with disabilites?
Absolutely! Everyone is welcome to be a Scout, just let a staff member know at a Join Scout Night Meeting, or contact Adam McCarrison at Adam.McCarrison@Scouting.org and they will be able to guide you on who to talk to ensure your child can enjoy Scouting to its fullest.
