SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT In celebration of Scouting’s 100th Anniversary, the BSA’s Norman Rockwell “History of Scouting” Art Tour is coming to Spartanburg’s Art Museum for just a few days this week. The exhibit will be open Saturday, June 26th (10am-5pm) and Sunday, June 27th (1pm-5pm) at a cost of $4 per adult and $2.50 per child. However… There is a unique “Scouting Family gathering” on Monday evening, June 28th (6pm-8:30pm) that will be free. This is when Scouts and family members will gather outside in the Chapman Cultural Center’s plaza for a giant Scouting “Tailgate party”. There will be games for the kids to play (corn hole, ladder ball, etc.), great Scouting fellowship, a chili cook-off and a dutch oven cooking competition--cash prizes will be awarded on-the-spot ($100 cash for the best-tasting chili, $100 cash for the hottest chili; $100 cash for the best-tasting cobbler and $100 cash for the most original dutch oven creation)! No registration is necessary—just show up and start cooking…but make enough to share (especially with the judges). Judging will be at 7:30pm. Above ground fires (only) are permitted and grilling out is allowed. Free-standing tarps are fine, too (the plaza is stone, so no anchored tarps allowed). Cars, trucks and trailers may park right next to the plaza (parking lots are on either side of the Chapman Cultural Center--located at 200 East St. John Street, Spartanburg, 29306). IDEAS… Bring a picnic! Why not stage a Troop REUNION? Or just come join in the larger celebration of multiple anniversaries: Scouting’s 100th…. Palmetto Council’s 75th…. Camp (re-opening as Bob Hardin)’s 25th Invite past Pack or Troop members to come see what’s going on in Scouting now. Invite grandparents—they will connect with Rockwell’s painting’s of yesteryear, americana, and timeless values. Invite friends who need to put their sons in Scouting. Eight of Rockwell's original Boy Scout oil paintings, each valued at over one million dollars--plus eight original works by acclaimed artist Joseph Csatari, who succeeded Rockwell as Scouting’s official artist in the 1970’s--will be on display. Geordy Johnson is Chairman of the Centennial Celebration Committee. Other Scouting memorabilia, such as the Johnson family collection and a hallway full of historical local artifacts will be on display. Trained volunteer docents will conduct tours, and experienced Scout hosts will explain our movement’s storied history. Attached are some sample paintings, most of which will be on display that night. Hope to see you there! |
